His official Rice University biography, penned upon his induction into that school’s hall of fame in 2011, notes that his career was cut short by injuries. Bu that is not the whole truth. Rodrigo Barnes was, he has long believed, punished for being an outspoken black man in an industry controlled by white men. He was banished for being “a radical at a time when radicals weren’t popular”, beloved Cowboy’s wide receiver Drew Pearson once said.
It might be tempting to say that before there was a Colin Kaepernick, there was Rodrigo Barnes – a man exiled from the game he loved. There may be a certain truth to the comparison. Both men sacrificed their pro football careers to protest the treatment of black men in America.

Our culture encourages us to form and vocalize opinions and judgments before we have an adequate foundation to understand the topic. We tend to train our minds to think in sound bites and 280-character tweets. Couple this with the human tendency to overestimate our ability, and it results in perpetuating fragmentation.
God is calling us to wake up and see what the enemy of our souls is doing. We must be sober and diligent. Paul admonishes us in Ephesians 6:10, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” We need a solid foundation that the enemy cannot penetrate

This book was originally written 17 years ago as a doctoral dissertation project about inner healing and deliverance for hurting women and children from sexual trauma and intimate partner violence, relating the narratives of women who have experienced healing. Although its focus during the initial dissertation process was narrowed to only include African American women, it is about all women, men, and children across all cultures. Considering the trauma experienced by the entire world during the COVID-19 pandemic, its expanded chapters include PTSD and other mental health challenges. It also includes research of other cultures. Though the author writes from a biblical based spiritual perspective, by no means is she implying, it is the only method of receiving healing.
