In 1980 I became a member of Faith Temple Apostolic Church under the leadership of Bishop Jerry McCullough. While there I taught Sunday school, did volunteer work at the state hospital, received presidency of the mother’s board, and was in charge of Monday night prayer service. In 1993 I was ordained a minister, I moved to Alachua, Florida in 1995. In 1995 I became a member of St. Luke AME Church under the leadership of Pastor Walter Lassiter. I worked in the ministry along with the late Rev. Alexander Holmes. I also assisted in 12:00 prayer service. From 1998 to 2003 I worked as part of the ministerial staff with Rev. Keeton, Rev. Denmark, Dr. Sconiers, Rev. McGriff and Rev. McCaslin. Presently, I am working under the leadership of my Pastor Rev. James Watkins Jr. I also have a jail ministry teaching, praying, encouraging and giving biblical counseling to young women. I have earned a master’s degree in Ministerial Theology and two doctorates, one Evangelism and the other Christian Philosophy in theology.

The Impossible Dream
Price range: $3.99 through $16.99Racism and healthcare disparities have always been a problem in the black community, especially small country towns. This book illustrates how a poor Black boy at the age of twelve watched his mother almost die from the lack of adequate health care from a White doctor.
I come from a very poor family of eleven children, poor education environment, low self-esteem, and with no Black professionals except for Black teachers to inspire me and other Blacks in the community; but at the age of twelve, I promised my mother that one day I would become a doctor so that Blacks would not have to suffer from the lack of adequate health care. The promise to my mother was “an impossible dream.”
By reading this book, you will learn how the miracles of God navigated my crooked journey and how the impossible was made possible, and I was able to obtain a Bachelor of Science, two years on a PhD program before completing a medical degree. Along with other health care providers, I was able to organize a not-for-profit organization to decrease healthcare disparities in the Black community.

Just Passing Through: A German-American Family Saga – Revised Edition
Price range: $3.99 through $29.99In this updated and revised edition of Just Passing Through: A German American Family Saga, first published in 2011, the author tells the story of several generations of his unique but dysfunctional family spanning over a hundred years including the two world wars. Peter Zell was eight years old when World War II ended and in a prologue entitled A German – American Childhood recounts his boyhood experiences that included the apocalyptic firebombing of his hometown of Stuttgart by the western Allies, the postwar occupation of Germany, and his family’s emigration to America. The book centers on the author’s mother, whom her children called Mutti, and her ordeal during the Nazi era for having been married to a Jew, the son of prosperous Frankfurt business owners, with whom she had two children. With anti-Semitism on the rise in Germany, her husband decided to emigrate to America but Mutti chose to remain behind to take care of her ailing father. The couple had an amicable divorce and while her ex-husband
took their son with him, their daughter remained with Mutti in Germany. Under the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, mother and daughter now found themselves classified as non-Aryans which meant that Mutti could not remarry while their teenage daughter, being half Jewish, was put in dire jeopardy of her life. At this point Mutti’s older brother, himself a dedicated National Socialist, proposed an unconventional solution that ensured her survival. Following his advice, Mutti had more children, fathered by so-called Aryans, who were eventually all brought to America. The book follows the lives of the five siblings, all half-brothers and half-sisters, and their difficult relationships with each other as each sought to achieve his or her version of the American Dream.

Eugene J. Phelan was born in New York City. An education specialist, and former special education teacher and counselor. Phelan lives and works in Kentucky. To Touch the Hand of God, based on an experience Phelan shared with his own daughter when she was seven years old, is his first book.

Following My Dreams
Price range: $3.99 through $16.99This is a compelling true story of a young boy born and raised in poverty in Oklahoma. He struggled in school, especially in reading and math. It was his mother who helped him learn reading and math, not his teachers. Fighting in order to protect himself resulted in several “paddling’s” and other disciplinary actions at school. Facing the possibility of being sent to a delinquent home for boys, he devised a plan where he would catch a train going north with King, a dog, who he promised would never be a stray dog again. He had even practiced jumping a boxcar while the train was moving! He would miss his family, but he was not going to the place for delinquent boys. In the fifth grade, with the help of his mother, he started turning things around. He accelerated to the top of his class in all subjects. Not only was he top of his class academically, but also, he burgeoned in sports. He played on the seventh- and eighth-grade basketball and baseball teams when he was only in the fifth grade. He loved reading about medicine, rockets, math, and the universe, among other subjects.
When he told his counselor and teachers that he wanted to become a doctor, he was encouraged to go into something else. Again, it was his mother that encouraged him to follow his dreams. With his poor education, it was doubtful his dreams would come to fruition. Still, he never gave up on his dreams. Through hard work and perseverance, his dreams come true.

This book contains the letters of my son wrote to me and my family while he was in prison.
He was out of state on a fishing trip when a friend broke into his house and set up a meth lab. When he returned home and started cooking his friend heard a loud bang on the door with a loud voice shouting. “This is the police, open the door!” He opened the door and they shouted, “Stand back! We need to search your house!”
The door to the back bedroom was locked. They cut the lock and found several fans running. All evidence was gone, but the smell was still there. My son was arrested and taken to jail. I saw his picture and the story on the evening news. I went to his house the next morning and police were everywhere. I ask, “What is going on?” He answered, “We found a meth lab in the bedroom.” I said, “Why was my son arrested. He didn’t do it, he was out of state for weeks, fishing!”
The police wanted my son to narc for them. If he didn’t, they wouldn’t take him to court. He narced for two years. Almost got killed and spent lots of money trying to make a drug bust. He did not make a bust.
We had to hire a lawyer and got on court. When the judge ask how do you plead. My son answered, “Your honor, I’m not going to plead guilty to something that I did not do, nor knew nothing about.” I am guilty of trying to help the guy after his family kicked him out. I let him spend a few night at my house while I was on my trip.
He was sentenced for 10 years for maintaining a drug house. He was sent to prison. He was put on work release. He was a master of electrion so started making good money. He has his own apartment at the prison. He said it wasn’t so bad, just missing family and friends and was the worst punishment. He saved enough money to buy a trucking company while working after he was released. He served 2 and a half years of the 10. When he got out, he said, “Thank you God! If I haven’t went to prison, I would never have saved enough money to buy my own business.
He wrote me every day for those 2 and a half years. I love him so! That’s why I’m sharing this story and his letters.

The Paths of My Life

His parents sent him and his older siblings to church, never attending themselves, except that his Mom started attending in her late 60’s. He’s now been a member of Mesa First Church of the Nazarene for two years. Pastor Ira Brown and the congregation are very warm and loving. It’s Martin’s second home. His two favorite hymns are, “Oh, How I Love Jesus,” and “To God be the Glory” He presently lives in Mesa, Arizona, and his daily goal is to live according to God’s will and follow His path.

Adolf Hitler’s Ghost

She then became a German citizen, and her father was drafted into the German Army to fight for Mr. Hitler in Russia. Elizabeth, her sister, and Mother spent most of the War in small villages to get away from the constant bombing raids on the big cities. After the War she could go back to Vienna and attend high school there. During the 6th grade of high school, she received an AFS Scholarship to the USA and spent one year in Erie, Pennsylvania, with an American family. After graduating from Medical School, she did a residency in Pathology. As a result of some lucky circumstances, she was invited by Stanford University, CA, on a fellowship in Pathology. She fell in love with California and decided to stay there, she continued her residency at the Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. After she could afford to buy a nice house in Los Angeles, she brought her three children to America. She stayed in LA until her retirement at the age of 66 years and moved to Santa Fe, NM, where she became a painter with the help of the Community College in Santa Fe. She now lives in Albuquerque, NM, and works as a professional painter.

A Young Man’s Dream / An Old Man’s Reality

It might be tempting to say that before there was a Colin Kaepernick, there was Rodrigo Barnes – a man exiled from the game he loved. There may be a certain truth to the comparison. Both men sacrificed their pro football careers to protest the treatment of black men in America.

Price range: $3.99 through $8.99I was born in a Harlem Hospital raised in Hell’s Kitchen. I ran the streets of Harlem New York, and my public school was in Harlem, also in Hell’s Kitchen. Thanks to my sister for giving me the inspiration to write my story. I began writing poetry in 1995 and life was hard, looking back; God has blessed me, and I have seen a lot in my lifetime. I have tried to better my life and tried helping others on the way. I went to Manhattan Bible Institute of New York for about a year. I graduated 1987 as an Evangelist then I moved to Hudson, New York. I joined State Street A.M.E. Zion Church and under the leadership of my Pastor, for about 3 years of studying, I had to travel from Hudson to New York and to other churches for my class. I moved to Poughkeepsie, NY and I joined Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion church, and I was ordain on 6-13-98 under the leadership of my pastor, I learned a lot. I have always dreamed of becoming a writer. This is the first book and poetry and I pray it won’t be my last. May God bless you and may it bring you hope.
