It compares African leadership with leaderships in other parts of the world with similar colonial experiences and identifies the problems posed by global powers protecting strategic interests in Africa. It also identifies the strength and weaknesses of democracy in the continent against the backdrop of all such difficulties as well as the up and down sides of the primordial African indigenous systems. It concludes with suggestions of possible alternatives to the current unworkable systems.

    Preacher’s Kid

    Price range: $3.99 through $14.99

Being a member of a preacher’s family brings on a myriad of expectations. The preacher’s wife must always project an image of being in tune with godliness. That is a learned condition where she walks around with an angelic smile and speaks softly to the congregants and is always available with a sympathetic ear and assurances that she will bring up their concerns to the pastor.

The preacher’s progeny is expected by everyone to be an example that all people can point to as a kid that the congregants can hold up to their normal children to aspire to. This is not only the expectation of the congregants but also of the preacher. Their mother, who did not get the calling, is responsible to see that they live up to their expectations as the preacher is too busy counseling the congregants and their children.

It is expected of a preacher’s kid, that they attend and lead in children and youth groups and that they by example extend the Christian teachings of their father. Also, is expected that a preacher’s kid is not worldly. He or she does not really know what life is all about for those who must struggle in the real world to survive. He or she have never been subjected to the words that get a mule team moving on a cold morning or the vagrancies of a Jersey cow who will only quit kicking at the milk bucket when she is told loudly that she is about to receive a swift kick in the ass with proper invectives. They don’t really know what life is all about and therefore are really not viable functioning people like normal kids are.

Of course, there is the other expectation of the maverick preacher’s kid. He is the kid that gets in trouble just like any normal kid and because he or she does not participate in the ministries to the church is considered a bad seed and unfortunately hinder the ministry of the preacher to his congregants.

The following is the story of a real preacher’s kid and his family from the recollections of a preacher’s kid.

Hope and Destiny: Truman, Eisenhower, Fulbright, and US Foreign Policy in the Middle East, 1945-1958

    Price range: $3.99 through $24.99

Hope and Destiny is a work of historical non-fiction that fully elaborates on how the United States became involved as the lead nation in foreign policy dealing with the Middle East. It is a work that focuses on how two US Presidents, Harry S. Truman and Dwight David Eisenhower, established Middle East foreign policies that would pave the way for all US Presidents who followed after them. The Middle East, regarded as the most challenging region for every US President since 1945, is as ambiguous and filled with ongoing events that are as unpredictable today as they have been over the past eight decades. The reason that Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright has an equal footing with both President Truman and President Eisenhower is the fact the he worked tirelessly for a policy that would focus strictly on Middle East issues, such as borders and Israeli-Palestinian issues. Better known for his stance against the Vietnam War, this book brings to light the enormous efforts that Senator Fulbright made for a more peaceful Middle East. Many of his ideas mirror those of President Lyndon Johnson, who established the “Five Major Principles” for a Middle East peace after the 1967 War and lead to Resolution 242 that stands as the standard for peace in the region in the twenty-first century. In addition to writing the Fulbright Resolution for the establishment of the United Nations and the Fulbright Act that established the flagship scholar program around the world, he also challenged US presidential power. The focus of this book is on the Truman Doctrine of 1947, the Eisenhower Doctrine of 1957 and the Fulbright Resolution of 1957. There are many actors presented in this book, US and foreign, that had a very significant place in shaping US foreign policy. Primary source research for Hope and Destiny includes those found in the Truman and Eisenhower Presidential Libraries and the Papers of Senator Fulbright at the University of Arkansas. Numerous Arabic and some Hebrew sources are spread throughout this work, as well as official sources from archives in the State of Israel. Numerous books were read as well as newspapers, journals and magazines.

    Destiny

    Price range: $3.99 through $24.99

Many children were born into poverty, and thus had no apparent reason to try to succeed. That was the case with Mahlon “Dick” Palmer. Dick was the youngest of four boys and was certainly not a welcome addition to the Palmer family. He was born in the midst of the greatest depression the country has ever experienced, thus another mouth to feed. There was one positive benefit though; this child did provide a cheap source of labor. As you will discover, Dick was expected to work 12 to 14 hours every day until he left home to join the Air Force when he was seventeen years old.

Dick’s very best childhood friend was his dog King, who is on the cover of this book. Without King, Dick’s childhood would have been very very difficult, for they were always together.

Life was about to change dramatically when Dick joined the Air Force when he was 17 years old. The title of the book, “Destiny,” is very appropriate since it was at that time when destiny played a major role in Dick’s life.

    Tales Times Ten

    Price range: $3.99 through $11.99

TALES TIMES TEN begins with the struggles of an up and coming young professional magician. We find him playing ‘finders – keepers’ inside and outside his Disappearing Cabinets, as MISTER MAGIC here in Detroit. Next, in a TWINKLING OF AN EYE, we are a witness with the ravens and a lone cardinal to one of those old time negotiations for a better life. After the ink is dry on the contract, we then take a visit to a Library of the Future as a student requests THE DOCTOR CLARK FILES. She is working up a thesis on the taboo deviant sexual behavior of certain members of Academia in the Twentieth Century. Before the authorities arrive, we find ourselves invited inside the mind of a lady architect killing time doing a puzzle in HOLY CROSSWORD DOROTHY. Just before she steps forward onto the stage, we head back to the vacant offices of Infinitex Enterprises. Here, even farther into the future, we discover the many faces of TACTILE UNDERSTANDING.

Better than halfway through, we find ourselves taking notes and dodging bullets. That is, before we spot the torn flyer requesting our presence at the grand opening of the TECHTOWN BOOK CLUB. We barely close the book on this event, when we grow increasingly alert to a rising din out there in the streets. We are startled to realize it can only be from the nearby LAND OF A THOUSAND CRIES. Now back to the future we go, leaving the screams of the past to die in the vacuum while we conduct a further learned study about the state of SEX EDUCATION. After being thoroughly briefed, regarding our study materials and classroom requirements, we then find ourselves in the Math Clinic hiding Internet Porn from the tutors as we are SOLVING FOR ‘X’.

Finally, with all this said and done, it is time to return our ticket stub to the Parking Attendant, after affixing our SPIRITUAL SIGNATURE to these TALES TIMES TEN

    Thoughts of Family

    Price range: $3.99 through $10.99

As a young kid, I think I was part of the last generation to experience a viewing for a family member in the person’s home.

Death of a loved one is painful enough, but when you see them in the environment which held memories of laughter and games and apple pie; The comprehension of those times are now tainted with sorrow that haunted the minds of young kids that were not mature enough to experience such a sad event.

The events depicted in this story are reminiscent of time more than 60 years ago when some young children were required to pay their last respects to departed family members and friends. The sadness, the fear, the lack of comprehension inundated the very soul of a child, yet it was believed the very spirit of the departed would not be at peace until all family members acknowledge there love.

This is a story of the weakness of one child in a very desperate and unrelenting situation.

    The Early Years: A Memoir

    Price range: $3.99 through $10.99

The author of this book, The Early Years, Rachel G. Carrington lays no claim to lofty jobs, higher education, nor grand accomplishments except for a love-filled, multifaceted, family-oriented, poverty-to-plenty life. In The Early Years, the first in a series, she shares her story.

As a young teenager, just entering high school in the small town of Denton, Kentucky, Carrington planned to attend college and become a teacher. With coursework geared toward college attendance, she was offered a lucrative scholarship that would help her to attain her goal. However, it took only a single event to send her down a different path. She met a returned World War II veteran who was attempting to pick up the pieces after finding his marriage in irreparable shambles and his children gone. As he struggled, Carrington was there, and they pulled together to clear the many hurdles before them.

In this memoir, she tells the story of their journey and how their love and dedication for each other kept moving them forward. Filled with the joys, disappointments, and struggles of a couple, The Early Years narrates how the love of the heavenly Father was the continuous thread that bound Carrington’s life together.

Marriage is a seedbed where God planted seeds of blessing, fruitfulness, increase and expansion. Marriage is a seed of life, when planted in good soil, it grows to become a tree that produces good fruits to feed nations, but if planted on a bad soil, it will produce bad seeds to cause infections and contaminate lives.
