The narrative of “The Devil In The Cave” by Dennis Obong Awoii revolves around Archibald Arthur, a World War II veteran, who grapples with the aftermath of his war experiences. Following his retirement from active military duty in November 1943, Archibald faces the daunting challenge of rebuilding his civilian life, which has been severely impacted by the intense trauma he endured during the war. The story is set in the background of Alaska, where he secures a job at the Anchorage Hotel, a place that offers him a semblance of safety and a chance to start anew.

Dennis Obong Awoli was born and raised in Lira, Northern Uganda. He went to Lira Primary/Elementary School, Lango College, Doctor Obote College Boroboro, and Kyambogo University, Kampala-Uganda. He came to the United States through the DV Lottery Program during the Obama years and went on to study at National American University in Tulsa Oklahoma where he lives with his family.

In 2018 when their daughter Kaitlyn was born, Dennis found himself facing the reality of having to tell her bedtime stories even though she was still very little. That was when he started thinking of writing a story for her in a quest to be counted as a good dad. In March 2019 when Dennis saw an advert about a writing competition on the Tulsa Library website where he did his research and writing, he put his plan into action and started on a simple chapter as a response. The simple chapter he started progressed steadily and became the book that he decided to publish and share with the world.

He hopes to keep the first printed copy for their little girl to read for herself when she becomes of age.

A pivotal moment in the story occurs when Archibald meets a young lady vacationing in Zagreb, Croatia. Their relationship is quickly deepened during a memorable picnic in the Alaskan mountains, after which Archibald’s life takes a dramatic turn. The narrative takes a darker twist when tragedy strikes, and he believes that a demonic force, referred to as “the Devil,” has a hand in the death of the young woman. This event propels Archibald into a quest for vengeance, but it also leads him to a profound realization that the battle he faces is not solely physical; it is a spiritual struggle as well.

As the story unfolds, Archibald embarks on a journey of survival in the harsh Alaskan wilderness. He confronts not only the external elements but also his inner demons. This duality of struggle showcases the complexity of his character and the themes of resilience and redemption. Accompanied by his loyal dog, Gossiper, Archibald eventually faces the embodiment of evil within a cave, marking a significant moment that signifies both an end and a new beginning for him, as he comes to understand the many layers of his battle, both carnal and spiritual.

In summary, “The Devil In The Cave” is a story that intertwines themes of trauma, love, and the quest for personal redemption. Archibald’s journey emphasizes the importance of facing one’s fears and the multifaceted nature of human battles, making it a compelling read that resonates with many readers.
