Dr. Reverend Serenus T. Churn Sr., the author of the book “Covid 19 and A Preacher’s Love Letters,” was interviewed by Benjie Cole of CBS Radio. What began as an impromptu act of pastoral care evolved into a series of deeply personal messages, offering scriptural reflections tailored to the fears, loneliness, and uncertainties of the time. Encouraged by his parishioners, who found solace in his writings and often shared them with others, Dr. Churn decided to compile these letters into a book. The result is a chronicle of resilience and faith during an unprecedented global crisis.

People of Distinction is one of the most wide-ranging radio shows in the United States, hosted by Benji Cole and Al Cole from CBS Radio. People of Distinction is the right fit for authors and readers to discover newly published books, mostly written by passionate and independent authors.

His formal education preparations include a Bachelor of Arts from Morgan State College, Baltimore MD; Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University, Washington D.C.; Pastoral Certificate from Foundation for Religion and Mental Health at Grasslands Hospital, Westchester County, N.Y.; and Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew University, Madison, N.J. Dr. Churn is married to the former Shirley Brown of Washington, D.C., and has two sons, Reverend Serenus T. Churn Jr. and Reverend Starling T. Churn. Dr. Churn has led and continues to lead the Mount Zion Baptist Church Congregation for 36 years.

The origins of “COVID-19 and a Preacher’s Love Letters” are as unique as the book itself. Dr. Churn never set out to write a book. In March 2020, when the pandemic forced churches to close and brought the world to a standstill, he found himself compelled to connect with his congregation in a way that transcended physical barriers. The very week his church suspended services, he began writing letters to each member, aiming to provide comfort, guidance, and spiritual nourishment.

The book is structured as a series of letters, each imbued with Dr. Churn’s reflections on scripture, current events, and the collective emotional state of his congregation. Written in real-time as the pandemic unfolded, these letters offer a unique perspective on a tumultuous period in history. Rather than looking back with hindsight, the book captures the raw emotions and spiritual dilemmas experienced by individuals and communities navigating uncharted waters.

The core lesson of the book is the transformative power of faith, hope, and love in the face of adversity. Dr. Churn reminds readers that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be met with resilience and compassion. By turning to scripture and community, we can find strength and clarity even in times of chaos.
