Creeping Shadows
Price range: $3.99 through $30.99The son of John and Viola Hastings, author Swede Hastings was born in 1941 in the small town of Roseburg, Oregon. In his early years, the family moved about the western part of the United States, following the fruit and work available. His family later returned to Roseburg and bought a small farm.
In 1958 Swede joined the US Navy. The next year there was a major explosion in the city of Roseburg, devastating the town. Swede, age 18, received emergency leave to help his family. While on leave, an accidental hunting tragedy resulted in his 15-year-old brother’s death. Due to the emotional trauma, he was suffering, Swede was institutionalized in California, where he had relived details of the accident. It was this tragedy which inspired him to write his first poem, Creeping Shadows.
Once released from the hospital, Swede found that keeping busy kept his mind off the accident. Throughout different highs and lows of his life, Swede would turn to words as an outlet. As with his first poem, the page seemed to hold the answers for dealing with things too emotional to confront any other way.
Swede feels that there is a time and place for each thought to be expressed, and we all have our unique individual ways to express our feelings. Since the experience of accepting the Lord, Swede believes that the best is yet to come.

Afro-American Me

Attending college has been more than just a higher education; it’s been a journey of discovering my true purpose and creative talents.
All my college instructors brought out the best in me. One instructor told me, “Always write what you know about.” That advice grew with me, and it’s never failed me. My poetry teacher always challenged me to go deeper with my poems. That advice motivated me to rewrite and revise my poems until they become masterpieces. I will never forget the last thing my poetry teacher said to me: “When you write your book, I’d like to have a copy.” Every poem and essay I’ve written has a personal connection-something I know about, a personal experience, how I feel, or my opinion about something.

Wrinkles
$3.99I think it was Maxim Gorky (lower depths) who once said that laughter not only opens the mouth to laugh but also opens the mind to thought.
In this book, there are many poems that give that food for thought, for consideration and debate, but I have added a humorous bent on much of the material, for as in my case at least, humour is a good, strong tool in dealing in many cases of diversity.
As for the rest of the book, well, it’s a mixture really with funny poems, well, just for a sake of a laugh.
