The Morada Clan of Bicol, therefore, as any family in the world, cannot claim a monopoly on life’s blessings and crucibles. But let me tell our peculiar stories just the same.
We are neither perfect, nor are our stories grandiose, but it’s our imperfections and their simplicity that make our stories more compelling and relatable. Even before the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, we told ourselves that someone had got to narrate them, or they could lapse and fade into insignificance and oblivion. That’s how and why my role came into being.
At work in Texas, they called me Mr. Purple. from an obscure corner of the Third World came this educator with his bio, love affair, work exploits, bittersweet memoir, and family history replete with actual events and genuine people, rolled into one. With the pandemic as standpoint, here is a look-back at the itsy-bitsy events that form the collective tale of my family and me – and my pursuit of the American Dream.

Preacher’s Kid
Price range: $3.99 through $14.99Being a member of a preacher’s family brings on a myriad of expectations. The preacher’s wife must always project an image of being in tune with godliness. That is a learned condition where she walks around with an angelic smile and speaks softly to the congregants and is always available with a sympathetic ear and assurances that she will bring up their concerns to the pastor.
The preacher’s progeny is expected by everyone to be an example that all people can point to as a kid that the congregants can hold up to their normal children to aspire to. This is not only the expectation of the congregants but also of the preacher. Their mother, who did not get the calling, is responsible to see that they live up to their expectations as the preacher is too busy counseling the congregants and their children.
It is expected of a preacher’s kid, that they attend and lead in children and youth groups and that they by example extend the Christian teachings of their father. Also, is expected that a preacher’s kid is not worldly. He or she does not really know what life is all about for those who must struggle in the real world to survive. He or she have never been subjected to the words that get a mule team moving on a cold morning or the vagrancies of a Jersey cow who will only quit kicking at the milk bucket when she is told loudly that she is about to receive a swift kick in the ass with proper invectives. They don’t really know what life is all about and therefore are really not viable functioning people like normal kids are.
Of course, there is the other expectation of the maverick preacher’s kid. He is the kid that gets in trouble just like any normal kid and because he or she does not participate in the ministries to the church is considered a bad seed and unfortunately hinder the ministry of the preacher to his congregants.
The following is the story of a real preacher’s kid and his family from the recollections of a preacher’s kid.

The Paths of My Life

His parents sent him and his older siblings to church, never attending themselves, except that his Mom started attending in her late 60’s. He attended Chicago’s Ashland Christian Church in his younger years, taking a break from church during his teen years, attending sporadically until late in his nine-year military career where his older bother introduced him to Mr. Herbert Armstrong and the Worldwide Church of God. He remained a member of this church over 30 years, most of that during extreme legalism, and through the time it had a major doctrinal change to Christ-centered worship. He’s now been a member of Mesa First Church of the Nazarene for two years. Pastor Ira Brown and the congregation are very warm and loving. It’s Martin’s second home. His two favorite hymns are, “Oh, How I Love Jesus,” and “To God be the Glory” He presently lives in Mesa, Arizona, and his daily goal is to live according to God’s will and follow His path.

Following My Dreams
Price range: $3.99 through $16.99This is a compelling true story of a young boy born and raised in poverty in Oklahoma. He struggled in school, especially in reading and math. It was his mother who helped him learn reading and math, not his teachers. Fighting in order to protect himself resulted in several “paddling’s” and other disciplinary actions at school. Facing the possibility of being sent to a delinquent home for boys, he devised a plan where he would catch a train going north with King, a dog, who he promised would never be a stray dog again. He had even practiced jumping a boxcar while the train was moving! He would miss his family, but he was not going to the place for delinquent boys. In the fifth grade, with the help of his mother, he started turning things around. He accelerated to the top of his class in all subjects. Not only was he top of his class academically, but also, he burgeoned in sports. He played on the seventh- and eighth-grade basketball and baseball teams when he was only in the fifth grade. He loved reading about medicine, rockets, math, and the universe, among other subjects.
When he told his counselor and teachers that he wanted to become a doctor, he was encouraged to go into something else. Again, it was his mother that encouraged him to follow his dreams. With his poor education, it was doubtful his dreams would come to fruition. Still, he never gave up on his dreams. Through hard work and perseverance, his dreams come true.

The Impossible Dream

This book illustrates how a poor Black boy at the age of twelve watched his mother almost die from the lack of adequate health care from a White doctor.
I come from a very poor family of eleven children, poor education environment, low self-esteem, and with no Black professionals except for Black teachers to inspire me and other Blacks in the community; but at the age of twelve, I promised my mother that one day I would become a doctor so that Blacks would not have to suffer from the lack of adequate health care. The promise to my mother was “an impossible dream.”
By reading this book, you will learn how the miracles of God navigated my crooked journey and how the impossible was made possible, and I was able to obtain a Bachelor of Science, two years on a PhD program before completing a medical degree. Along with other health care providers, I was able to organize a not-for-profit organization to decrease healthcare disparities in the Black community.
