    Portersville

A flicker of lightning behind a thunderhead then a deep rumble marked the approach of a storm. Selena squeezed the hand of her handsome Greek husband. Together they peered across the vastness of the Gulf of Mexico while digging their toes into the cool sand. A weathered lighthouse offshore split the darkness, casting its light across the treacherous waters.

They braced themselves against the wind gusts and pelting rain. Between lightning strikes, they watched the squall line draw nearer. A dark tendril reached skyward attaching itself to the cloud above. The waterspout danced along the outer sandbars then crashed ashore ripping and tearing before dissipating among the pines and sand dunes.

Only twelve miles to the north, hotels glowed like jewels scattered along the shoreline. Bandstands blasted out music across the bay as vacationers danced under the stars and giant oaks. Children carrying torches and nets squealed and laughed while chasing crabs in the shallow grass beds. Lovers whispered as they walked along the banks of the bay. Old people sat in the glow of lantern light on their porches reminiscing of times gone by, legends of pirates, fast schooners, floating spirits, and the lost art of voodoo. Lightning on the southern horizon gave warning that the evening was about to change.

Cy and Selena fled Greece to avoid a personal storm and protect their families. They knew that this same storm could cross the ocean and track them to Portersville. Dripping wet and chilled, they vowed never to run again.

Dream Team: Saints and Gentle Souls From the World of Sports

Former Marquette University basketball coach Al McGuire retired from coaching in 1977, just months after leading Marquette to the NCAA championship. When announcing his departure, McGuire explained, “There’s more to life than coaching guys in short pants.” Baseball great Roberto Clemente was even more to the point: “Anytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.”

With a voice that exudes his love of sportsmanship and his faith in God’s plan, attorney Frederick J. Day presents the fascinating and uplifting true stories of athletes, coaches, and sportswriters who, like McGuire and Clemente, recognized that life matters well beyond what takes place on a court or field. Showcasing the goodwill of dozens of sports heroes from the last century, Day proves that athletes can serve as powerful inspiration for positive contributions to society.

Dream Team pays tribute to athletic pillars who understood, as did tennis player Arthur Ashe, that “the purest joy in life comes with trying to help others.”

The Legend of D’Woof-ta: The Little White Wolf

ln the beginning of time, all the free people roamed the fields, plains, and forests of the new world and grew in numbers until the lands became overcrowded. The animals became hungry. Father Time saw the problem and, one moonlit night, brought forth the Great Mother Wolf from the waters of the first spring. He then charged her to take from the free people the old, sick, and injured so that the strongest and fittest would share the gifts of the new world. Soon the Mother Wolf became overwhelmed with the task that Father Time had given her. She went to Father Time and begged for some helpers. That night she was given four new cubs that looked just like her. The animals were very unhappy and went to Mother Nature to complain that they could not rest because of all the new wolves.

Speedbumps in the Middle of the Sea

The author was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. He was very mischievous, so he was sent to a boarding school in England. Since he did not participate in sports, he did all his homework (Prep, as they called it) during sports hour. As a result, he would wash dishes after evening meals, and all three Sunday meals, to earn extra money. With the extra money, he would buy candy, and records (45 RPM in those days). He would then make a recording of these songs on a cassette tape and send the tape back home to his sister. Since, in those days, Kenya was not yet up-to-date on modern technology, the songs on the charts were not quite caught up. So my sister would get songs that they had not heard on the radio yet!

From his high school, he went to University in USA (Atlanta) to study Business Administration. He could not get his rights to stay in USA, so he had to return back to Kenya. Meanwhile his parents had emigrated to England, so the author spent time with his grandparents, uncles and aunts. After a long stay in Kenya, (20 years), his sister sponsored him to come to Canada.

This book, Speedbumps in the Middle of the Sea, is all about his adventures from High school to present day. With a title like this, it promises to be hilarious. Enjoy!

All Riled Up : A Story of Wreckage, Restoration, and Rebirth

Higginbotham, after a near fatal, debilitating car wreck, regains consciousness after an extended coma and is now catapulted back into the stream of life. Here, Riley Higginbotham is joined by Ted L Carroll (author of The Weathering of Strawberry Ben, The Strawberry Ben Spiritual Workbook, and Illegal Jesus) to co-author this work, Higginbotham’s writing debut. All Riled Up, although fiction, is the parallel story of mid-thirties Rave, his fiancée Annie, Brode (Rave’s best friend), Kade (Rave’s son), Milly (Annie’s mother and Rave’s very own ‘Mrs. Robinson’-esque obsession ). Between Rave’s near-death experience, Brode’s relentless friendship (despite his severe alcoholism) and Kade’s early years’ survival, one can only wonder if Annie’s dragon-chasing habit will kill her – or everyone – involved.

Seven Things That Heaven and Hell Have In Common

Has anyone ever taken the time to talk to you about Heaven and Hell? Have you studied them on your own? Do you realize you are a mortal? You will die. Someday. How does that make you feel? You heard me right. You decide where you will end up. So, with that being said, permit me to ask one more question. Are you going to Heaven or are you going to Hell?

Brightfire: A Tale of Sutton Hoo

Born in Zambia, I lived in Cape Town, before leaving on a transport ship in 1944 to return ‘home’ to England. My parents wanted to be with their families, even though World War 2 had not ended.

We lived in Kent, Surrey, Yorkshire and Norfolk before I went to Royal Holloway College, University of London, to read English (including Old English and Modern Drama). I have lived and taught in Suffolk since my marriage in 1964, and eventually became Head of English and Drama at Woodbridge School.

What is important to me? My family; literature, both reading and writing; theatre, on both sides of the curtain and travel. I am very fortunate to have travelled almost worldwide, from Iceland to Australia.

I am a National Trust volunteer at Sutton Hoo (site of the famous ship burial and treasure) and a Sutton Hoo Society Guide. I thoroughly enjoy sharing the history of Sutton Hoo with thousands of visitors each year. Renewing my acquaintance with the Anglo-Saxons re-awakened my interest in their language, culture and customs, and lead me to write two Anglo-Saxon historical novels based in the land of the Wuffings in the 7th century AD.

Apart from this writing, among the most exciting things I have done are swimming with dolphins on the Florida Keys, scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef and acting in the National Drama Festivals, where I was lucky enough to get a nomination in the Final.

Writing is something of a fourth career, as I have also worked as a TV film extra and run a local bookshop. As our forebears knew, life is for living and knowledge is for sharing: I enjoy giving talks to local societies and book clubs as well as doing book-signings.

    Storm Frost

There exists an Anglo-Saxon manuscript, where we hear of an outcast wife, a husband, his messenger, a lover and a baby. Merge these tales with what we know of the royal family buried at Sutton Hoo in East Anglia, including Raedwald and his brother, Eni, living at the end of the 6th century AD.They believe in the old gods, like Woden, and have not yet encountered Christianity. Their culture is vibrant, exciting, terrifying in its cruelty, and uninhibited in its morality. Travel from the East Anglian fenlands, over northern moors to the remote Northumbrian river where the story reaches its climax. Along the way, discover life in a royal hall or a hovel; cure wounds or inflict them; share a feast or scrape a meal; work fertility charms or protect your folk from evil. Here is a tale of love and betrayal, courage and fear. Niartha, the fictional heroine, outcast from her people, encounters hardship, abuse and loss as she seeks her exiled lover; her survival depends on her practical skills, unexpected in a king’s daughter. In their desires and social lives, Anglo-Saxons, although separated from us by fourteen hundred years, are not so very alien, after all.

    Metamorphosis of a Young Maiden

From December 1969 until June 1970, Dr. Wm. Patric Leedom’s love interest, Shelley, allowed herself to go through major changes-from a naïve, shy recluse who never considered sex in relation to herself, to a more sophisticated young woman trusting another for the first time, feeling completed and totally loved for the first time. Metamorphosis of a Young Maiden is a collection of love letters between the two from 47 years ago. It is a powerful example of two lovers going deep into life and making themselves vulnerable to each other as they build toward an intense relationship. We should all remember to take risks with our partners and be encouraged to seek the deeper meanings and experiences that life can offer.

Global Warming: All You Need To Know

This is the third book Wilfred Candler has self-published on the problem of Global Warming and the first on the associated issues of our running out of Non-Renewable Natural Resources. These problems will lead us back to the lifestyle we enjoyed before 1750, with or without electricity. As discussed in his book, Wilfred argues that although there is popular agitation to reduce the use of fossil fuels, there is no widespread awareness of the severity of the crisis. In 1750 (and before), the world supported less than a billion people (much less in previous centuries), with horse-drawn transport, little international trade, and no electricity.

People are still promoting a switch to wind and solar electricity generation, seemingly unaware that this only provides intermittent power (think a dark, windless night) when cheaper, permanent, and continuous molten salt nuclear power is available.

Although this book does not have suggestions for how we are to go from eight to one billion people, it does make the case that this is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Helen Gordon: the Woman Behind the Greensheet

In 1969, Helen Gordon moved to Houston with her new husband, Robert DeYoung. A no-nonsense, pragmatic mother of three with the heart of a musician and the soul of a painter, Helen was determined to be her own boss by owning and operating her own company. It didn’t take her long to find success. Helen started the Greensheet, a free advertising tabloid with classified ads and a list of business services, in 1970. Within eight years, she expanded it to five Texas cities without the help of bank loans. But she lived in a good of boy atmosphere, in which long lunches over dry martinis were the norm and women were generally absent from the boardroom.

Even so, Helen was undeterred. She was determined to build a company that would prosper, and prosper it did. By 2012, the Greensheet had grown to a circulation of 650,000 and appeared within four Texas cities. Today, her company is a household name and continues to be one of the most successful classified tabloids in the state.

Her irrepressible optimism, sense of humor, and vivacious personality served her well in her personal and professional life. As told by her daughter, Rebecca, Helen Gordon: Th c Woman Behind the Greensheet is Helen’s inspiring true story.

Rebecca G. Blakeley worked for the Greensheet and Gordon Flowers with her mother for more than twenty-nine years. She is currently retired and works as a volunteer in the Houston community.

Global Warming: The Answer (The Energy Dividend)

Global Warming: The Answer takes as given that global warming is man-made and occurring with increasingly adverse effects. After a brief review of the carbon cycle (and how man is disturbing it), the book argues that global warming is an economic problem: Given the right prices, technical solutions will follow. After looking at the (limited) solutions for “personal virtue” in reducing pollution, the book examines the chimera of “a carbon neutral life-style,” and necessity to achieve a fossil-free economy. Cap and Trade is shown to involve huge wealth transfers to established polluters and is thus rejected in favor of a “revenue neutral, carbon tax.” More specifically an initial carbon tax of $250 ton, with the revenue returned the public through lowered payroll taxes in the U.S. (or V.A.T. or sales taxes elsewhere). Existing and pending technologies that will take-off once fossil fuels are taxed are reviewed, as are ancillary policies in support of the carbon tax. Some suggestions are offered for increasing international collaboration. It is emphasized however that to date no significant action has been taken to combat global warming: Kyoto, higher mileage requirements, and An Inconvenient Truth not-withstanding. Action is urgent! But first the public have to understand the answer to global warming.

Weeping: The Soul of a Christian Nation

Christianity has been defined and framed by the rulers of kingdoms, civilizations, and governments for thousands of years. A religion started in the name of Jesus is now under more scrutiny than ever, with people being divided over what it means to be humane, to be giving, and to have a good heart. To help ease those divisions, we must go back to the beginning of religion itself. This book takes a deep dive into what the Bible teaches and how those lessons have been interpreted throughout history.

The author seeks to answer questions such as:

•Will history prove that America has sustained her strength because of God’s grace and favor?

•What exactly are Christian principles and what are the origins of these principles? • What does it really mean to “love they neighbor?”

•What message did God give to His people to follow? Throughout the book, the author examines the cause and effect of religion-as well as the principles America was founded upon. He argues that if more people understood the Bible, the country would show more love to all of its citizens.

    The Greatest Human Deception

The Greatest Human Deception is certainly one of the most explosive thought-provoking books of immense proportions and dimensions. Certainly, a “Christian Classic” and a must-read book beneficial to all. Using indisputable scientific facts, the author diagnoses the reasons for world problems of health, hatred with wars, and provides the “magic” prescription to cure all individuals and world problems. Argues forcibly that the present educational system of the world is flawed because it is in the “wrong direction,” and advocates a “turn around” to the “right type of education.” And inspiration to believers, an eye-opener to unbelievers, a challenge to atheists, agnostics, and the uncommitted. In the Greatest Human Deception, the existence of God is not an exercise of “Quod Erat Faciendum” but a magnificent and colossal statement of “Quod Erat Demonstratum” (that which has been proven or demonstrated). A grand philosophical edifice, cemented with scientific facts.

    Jennifer’s Destiny

    Dear Readers,

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I’d be writing this to you, but here goes. I always assumed someone else would write about the author, but this time I decided to do it myself. I’m not much of a reader, mostly for research, but I love to write, poetry, newspaper articles, short stories, and that’s what sort of got this project started. More years ago than I’d like to admit my mom, knowing I like to write, sent me a magazine she subscribed to with a note on the front to look on a certain page where I found a full page describing an amateur writing contest they have every year. It’s been so long ago that I don’t remember what the prize amount was, but it was five figures I do remember that and it could only be up to 25,000 words, I think. Gee, I thought that was an awful lot of words. Had no idea what I might write about, but agreed I’d give it some thought.

Then one day on the USPS rural one hundred and nine miles mail route I used to run an incident that happened to one of the girls in our high school years ago crossed my mind. I was never sure how the unfortunate situation was handled, but while I drove the rest of the route I began to imagine what I’d would do if I was in the same situation. That was the beginning of my short story. I’d think of something out on one of those lonely roads, like it and couldn’t wait until I could get home and put it on paper. When I finished that idea the story contained too many words to enter their contest.

And besides that it didn’t feel finished to me anyway. That’s when my vivid imagination really began to work overtime. As it happened at the time I was going through a divorce and had an abundance of time on my hands, so just let my mind wander. Where would the story go from there? And why? What motivation would that girl have? Really! But fate had in for her something she, like me, could never have imagined. I hope you like what she did, experienced, learned and enjoyed along the way. I think she did!
