Playing Hurt
Price range: $3.99 through $9.99BRIAN is playing his last high school football game. When he gets hurt, the coach tells him he must stay in the game since there isn’t anyone to replace him. Brian is worried about his future and his love for DEANIE, a beautiful cheerleader.
After the game, trouble develops when BILL, Deanie’s old boyfriend returns to town. Brian is distracted by e beer party and mischief with the rival school. Deanie is with her girlfriends when Bill appears. Deanie is coerced into his car and forced to have sex. Deanie doesn’t tell Brian. Bill leaves town, promising to return in the spring.
In February, Deanie tells Brian she is four months pregnant. Brian counts the months back and suspects that Bill might be the father. Deanie confesses and Brian is devastated. When Bill returns, Brian lures him out of town. Bill is severely beaten, but when Brian’s back is turned, Bill manages to get into his car and grab his pistol. Brian is shot in the arm. With the barrel pressed against Brian’s head, Bill blurts out that he had sex with Deanie many times. Suddenly there is another shot, but this time a bullet slams into Bill’s chest. Deanie is holding Brian’s rifle. Bill dies at the hospital.
In the summer, Deanie gives birth to a baby with dark hair and eyes like Bill’s. Heartbroken, Brian enlists in the army. Aboard the bus, he agonizes over leaving Deanie. Alone and afraid, he slumps back in the seat. Then, he remembers what his coach said about playing hurt, and he realizes that he must go on, even if it does hurt.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I’d be writing this to you, but here goes. I always assumed someone else would write about the author, but this time I decided to do it myself. I’m not much of a reader, mostly for research, but I love to write, poetry, newspaper articles, short stories, and that’s what sort of got this project started. More years ago than I’d like to admit my mom, knowing I like to write, sent me a magazine she subscribed to with a note on the front to look on a certain page where I found a full page describing an amateur writing contest they have every year. It’s been so long ago that I don’t remember what the prize amount was, but it was five figures I do remember that and it could only be up to 25,000 words, I think. Gee, I thought that was an awful lot of words. Had no idea what I might write about, but agreed I’d give it some thought.
Then one day on the USPS rural one hundred and nine miles mail route I used to run an incident that happened to one of the girls in our high school years ago crossed my mind. I was never sure how the unfortunate situation was handled, but while I drove the rest of the route I began to imagine what I’d would do if I was in the same situation. That was the beginning of my short story. I’d think of something out on one of those lonely roads, like it and couldn’t wait until I could get home and put it on paper. When I finished that idea the story contained too many words to enter their contest.
And besides that it didn’t feel finished to me anyway. That’s when my vivid imagination really began to work overtime. As it happened at the time I was going through a divorce and had an abundance of time on my hands, so just let my mind wander. Where would the story go from there? And why? What motivation would that girl have? Really! But fate had in for her something she, like me, could never have imagined. I hope you like what she did, experienced, learned and enjoyed along the way. I think she did!

Dragons in the Clouds

He then gives the Dragons strict instruction to live within the clouds and to only come down at night to eat. An apprentice to the wizard who has grandeur of his own has a plan for Dragons that he has hidden deep within a mountain cavern. Now enters a young boy, who had also befriended a dragon, though a very young one, suddenly find themselves caught between the Kings order and a battle that has begun between two species of Dragons. A battle that would determine control of the skies above the Kingdom of Albian. This Apprentice’s plan has consequences that may bring the Kingdom and perhaps the very world we live in today to an devastating end.

Murder at the House of Funerals

When the violence finally erupts in a most appropriate, if grisly, fashion, Tracy is right there to begin her investigation, especially when her hero is charged with the crime. Not surprisingly, she discovers multiple possible motives including buried secrets, sheer hatred, and old-fashioned showmanship. But can Tracy find the truth in time so the show can go on? It’s another Tracy Brubaker mystery filled with tricks, treats, and surprises. Happy Halloween!
