    Boston Darkens

The Kenyan runner was the favorite to win this year’s Boston Marathon. At least that’s what the sports broadcaster blurted on Ben’s car radio. He was on the Mass Pike, making his way through heavy traffic. Just a few more miles to go. Suddenly a shockwave of energy burst through the air. Ben’s car shut down.

Dumbfounded, he held tight to the steering wheel. What the fuck, he thought. His Honda Accord was new. He turned the ignition switch over, but there was nothing. He tried the lights, windows, and door, but again nothing. It was just dead as a doornail. “Damn,” he muttered and grinned. After a minute he looked around him. It wasn’t rush-hour traffic. He was in a huge parking lot.

Jessica, Ben’s daughter, was in her classroom. As a high school student, she was coming down the home stretch. Her whole life was ahead of her. The teacher was beginning the first lesson. Click the lights, and computers went off. “Stay calm” the teacher said. Seconds turned into minutes. A student raised his hand.

He had to go to the bathroom. Confusion and anxiety set in. The principal was beside himself. What was the protocol for this? There was no cell phone reception, and the police or fire departments weren’t showing up. Minutes turned into hours. Action was required. Would he make the wrong decision? Would he endanger lives? Would he be sued? His pay grade was high but not high enough for this.

Ben, Alice (his wife), Randy (his son), and Jessica were living the American dream. They were now confronted by an evil act of aggression, a life-changing event for this wholesome family, their neighbors, and everyone within hundreds of miles. This drama portrays a family’s efforts to survive. In their struggle, they are joined together by an unlikely collection of heroes—Ben, his shy teenage daughter, Jessica, and her friend Vivian. He has a rebellious son named Randy and an eccentric recluse of a neighbor who’s an intellectually challenged adult. There is a neighborhood construction contractor, a keen, quiet-spoken hip Native American father a fair-play, Easy Rider biker dude, a couple of “fly by the seat of their pants” local cops, the Massachusetts Turnpike, and of course Randy’s lovingly restored classic: a 1958 Buick. You’ll have to read it to believe it.

    Boston Flickers

Jessica had been bicycling hard for two hours in a desperate attempt to be with her boyfriend Joshua. Her father had basically forbidden any further contact. With nothing else to live for, she was on a dangerous journey. It was bad enough to drive through this lawless countryside in a vintage car. Alone, on a bicycle, it was almost unthinkable. Exhausted, she laid down on the side of the road and made peace with the Lord.

An EMP blast has littered most roads in the eastern U.S. with stalled cars, their modern computer-based ignitions fried beyond repair. Ben Randall had formed a survival collaborative with his neighbors. They had to venture out for food, water and medicines while trying to avoid local gangs of thugs. Local governments were operating with skeletons crews at best. Officer Ryan was one of the few Massachusetts State Police officers who had transportation and was able to remain at his post. As a member of Ben’s collaborative, he coordinated the formation of a new collaborative. It took an hour’s drive with the non-computerized antique Buick that Ben’s son Randy had lovingly restored.

Daniel was the leader of the new collaborative. He was a talented man who spoke a number of languages, was a decent musician, and had the natural gift to be a good salesman. Trouble is, he is not a hands-on guy. Starting in the mix in the new collaborative was Daniel’s wife, who is often at odds with him, and his son Joshua. Ah, Joshua, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Leaving college early, Joshua’s dreams were like those of his dad. He was also gifted with the gab, loved sales and meeting people. He too was worldly, spoke several languages, and come across as a handsome, confident young man.

When the two collaborative meet, it is the encounter of Jessica and Joshua that sets off a tangled journey through danger, survival and love. It inflicts family wounds and eventually pushes the two lovers to leave for “tent city”. Like the first book, “Boston Darkens”, you will find this story fast paced, and captivating to the end.

“Boston Flickers” is a story of family conflict, friends, and romance, mixed-in with the wit of a unique cast of characters.

    Boys of Babylon

There is a small tourist trap in the Northern Midwest. A trap may be exactly what it is. People go for the fudge, but is it good enough to risk their lives for? During the summer of 2004, like every year, tourists make their way into town. However, this year, six pubescent boys take advantage of several unsuspecting vacationers, sending them to a watery grave on a popular recreational river. This rite of passage turns on the town when tragedy strikes one of their own. Brides for A King: Fathers, Daughters and the National Interest: England & France 1660-1

Luke is ordered by the King to investigate the intrigues and deaths surrounding the King’s forthcoming marriage-with particular emphasis on England’s foreign policy and national security.

The increased attacks on past mistresses and potential wives might be central to these concerns or stem from the simple jealousy of women anxious to obtain the King’s favour or lying about their past relationships, conflicts often within the same family; or do these current problems stem from events that occurred during the King’s decade in exile; or the current greed and ambition of powerful noble dynasties.

    Bridging the Chasm

Bridging the Chasm is about two brothers, in love with the same girl as they go through adventures and trials spanning almost thirty years. It starts with

the tremendous flood that created the Salton Sea in 1905, follows a battle in WW1 that credited the U. S. Marines as a separate fighting force in America, the battle of Belleau Wood. It ends in 1934 with all characters, both major and minor meeting at the construction of Hoover Dam and the build up of a city known as Las Vegas. We follow them through these periods and watch them develop along with minor characters through to the tumultuous

ending where lives are lost and the two that should be together do not get together at the end.. It is fast paced with family adventure, danger, violence,

humor, a little romance and history. The characters are fictional, the events happened in the past so I guess you could say it’s semi-fictional. Sort of like

a bridge between fiction and non-fiction.

After the end of the book, all 48 states of the United States that contributed men/materials and companies will be listed plus other historical contributions

in the construction of Hoover Dam during the Great Depression.

Brightfire: A Tale of Sutton Hoo

Born in Zambia, I lived in Cape Town, before leaving on a transport ship in 1944 to return ‘home’ to England. My parents wanted to be with their families, even though World War 2 had not ended.

We lived in Kent, Surrey, Yorkshire and Norfolk before I went to Royal Holloway College, University of London, to read English (including Old English and Modern Drama). I have lived and taught in Suffolk since my marriage in 1964, and eventually became Head of English and Drama at Woodbridge School.

What is important to me? My family; literature, both reading and writing; theatre, on both sides of the curtain and travel. I am very fortunate to have travelled almost worldwide, from Iceland to Australia.

I am a National Trust volunteer at Sutton Hoo (site of the famous ship burial and treasure) and a Sutton Hoo Society Guide. I thoroughly enjoy sharing the history of Sutton Hoo with thousands of visitors each year. Renewing my acquaintance with the Anglo-Saxons re-awakened my interest in their language, culture and customs, and lead me to write two Anglo-Saxon historical novels based in the land of the Wuffings in the 7th century AD.

Apart from this writing, among the most exciting things I have done are swimming with dolphins on the Florida Keys, scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef and acting in the National Drama Festivals, where I was lucky enough to get a nomination in the Final.

Writing is something of a fourth career, as I have also worked as a TV film extra and run a local bookshop. As our forebears knew, life is for living and knowledge is for sharing: I enjoy giving talks to local societies and book clubs as well as doing book-signings.

As COVID-19 ravages the world and the daily death toll rises, Rasna is reminded of another time and place when she had been caught in a somewhat similar cataclysmic occurrence.

She, with her family, had been on vacation in Sri Lanka when the tsunami had struck, and so had consequently become entangled in natures web of disaster in which she had not only lost but also become reunited with loved ones.
