Expect No Help: The Life and Times of Jumpin’ Jack Flash Common Sense from an Uncommon Source

    Price range: $3.99 through $26.99

Someone didn’t like the radio station that was playing, so it got shot up. Wood was being split in the kitchen and thousands of beer cans were strewn all over the place. Motorcycles and parts were all in the dining room. That became the garage. Some girl painted the Stones’ big tongue on one of the walls. It took up the whole wall and she did a really good job. Rusty would stop in every now and then with his buddies. All of Johnny’s friends thought that Rusty was pretty cool, and he would take a look around and ask, “You guys gonna be alive tomorrow?”

Follow Jumping Jack, a free-spirit extraordinaire with a taste for anything dangerous. Flipping, smashing, and burning twenty-dollar cars; throwing weeklong crack parties; and the author’s political views on DUIs along with other contemporary issues are detailed in this tell-all romp of a memoir.

Join Johnny and the crew, stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of steel from old metal shops just to survive. Experience the anything-goes, vagrant lifestyle that defined the 1960s. Find out what it is to be yourself, even if you take a long way. The author reminds us of what it means to be American. Cesspool speaks from the heart, and it shows.

An Angel is Born: A Family’s Story

    Price range: $3.99 through $24.95

It would be impossible to keep track of all the people that we encounter during the course of a lifetime; however, the few that affect and change us forever could be counted on the fingers of one hand. There are people such as those depicted within this book. There are a lot of people whose stories are told here: their lives, their times, and their fate, but there was one who changed everyone around her without ever trying. An Angel is born spans the course of nearly seven decades, and looks back at a time when things were simpler yet not always better.

If you are nostalgic you’ll reminisce, if you are a parent you will appreciate, if you are spiritual you will be sustained, and if you have a heart you will be forever moved. Their lives, their world, their future lay before them sweet and dying… Angel’s parents sat at her bedside holding her hand and whispering sacred words of encouragement with agonizing thoughts of farewell. Then a voice from the Holy Firmaments of heaven spoke to them saying, ”You are now separated…”

…a story about how generations shaped by the unique demands of Appalachia helped one kid to thrive against all odds.

An Angel Is Born is much more than a story about the life and death of an amazing girl with special needs. Nostalgic, honest, and moving, this is a contemplative history of how every life–and every death–adds its own thread to the tapestry of a family and community.

    Being with Becky

    Price range: $3.99 through $13.99

No one said a word as we struggled to walk in the blustery cold to the spot where we would gather one more time to be with her. We all stared ahead to the area resting under the large crucifix, where we would say goodbye to her for the last time. I looked at the small, square hole in the frozen ground and started trembling. This would be her final resting place. Choking back tears and gasping to catch my breath, I wondered how a young woman so full of life and goodness could be ripped away from us in such a cruel and horrific manner. How could this have happened? How would we survive? No answers came to me. The only truth was that Becky was dead, and our lives would be forever changed. BEING WITH BECKY is based on the true life-sharing experiences of two sisters from Northwest Ohio. The author weaves tales of their times together from early family gatherings to ski trips with friends, revealing the close bond they treasured deeply. When Becky is tragically killed, the author must wrestle with the emotional chaos that sets in and cripples her spirit. In a world that no longer makes any sense, she desperately tries to pick up the pieces of her life and vows to honor the sister who once called her, my hero.

The Perils of Beginnings: A Cavazos Historical Memoir

    Price range: $3.99 through $12.99

In 1967, the 18-year-old author hopped into her spicy Auntie Eloisa’s new GTO to embark on a road trip from San Antonio, Texas, to Tampico, Mexico. While searching for her baptismal certificate, Auntie shares the history of Narciso, a bold visionary who, in 1793, left an aristocratic life in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to cultivate the 600,000 acres of land awarded to him by the King of Spain. As Narciso’s story unfolds, so do the secrets of the two women. Told with humor and warmth, I delighted in Bernadette’s tales of a cow greeting her while using an outdoor toilet, Auntie dropping her bloomers while dancing with abandon to the mariachis’ music, and a “gentle” horse baring her teeth at the author before riding her into the river. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys history, romance, and colorful characters.

Bernadette Inclan does an outstanding job weaving two periods of history to tell the story of her life and ancestor, José Narciso Cavazos, one of the early Texas settlers.
