“The Role of Spiritual Caregivers to the Terminally Ill Patients” by Jim Garcines is among the books displayed by Author Reputation Press during the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, on October 16-20, 2024.

The 76th Frankfurter Buchmesse (16–20 October 2024) puts a spotlight on current topics in the world of international publishing and on today’s socio-political issues. This year, Frankfurter Buchmesse is once again demonstrating its indispensability as a venue for professional exchange in the global book industry, thanks to its fully booked Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg), the largest meeting place of its kind worldwide, as well as an expanded audio area and an increase in international stages and trade events, including high-ranking CEO talks.

The mission of Author Reputation Press is to foster literary connections between authors and readers. In line with this, ARP displayed several of its remarkable books at the largest book trade fair in the world. The book gallery was even more interesting because of the large variety of genres in the exhibition. 

The book “The Role of Spiritual Caregivers to the Terminally Ill Patients” by Jim Garcines explores the essential functions that spiritual caregivers perform in providing support to terminally ill patients. The narrative highlights the significance of spiritual care in the context of terminal illness, emphasizing how caregivers help patients navigate profound emotional, ethical, and spiritual challenges. The author delves into the various roles that spiritual caregivers undertake, including offering companionship, facilitating meaningful conversations, and helping patients connect with their spiritual beliefs.

Jim Garcines came from Cagayan de Oro City, the southern part of the Philippines. He completed his seminary training at Doane Baptist Seminary in Iloilo City, Philippines, in 1978. He then came to the US in 1983. After two years, he started a church in San Jose, CA. He took his graduate studies at Liberty Baptist University and Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, VA, and completed his master’s degree in 1996. He was ordained on January 5, 1985, at International Baptist Church, Vallejo, CA. At this writing, Jim is a pastor consultant at Filipino International Baptist Church in Elk Grove, CA, and a missionary with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE).

Jim has planted churches in California and Nevada and has experience as a palliative chaplain at West Alley Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente. He completed clinical pastoral education training with HCMA in 2005 and is a Board-Certified Chaplain and a member of the Spiritual Caregiver Association of the USA.

Jim continues to get his CPE and completed his one-year residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, in 2012. He worked as a psychiatric chaplain at Napa State Mental Hospital and Sutter Memorial Medical Center. He is also a frequent lecturer on “End of Life Issues” and “Hospice Spiritual Interventions.” In “Suicidal Prevention,” he offers grief support to families, medical staff, and caregivers. Jim has been married to Carol Vasquez Garcines for over 44 years and is blessed with two children: Jica and Jeriah, both graduates of Bob Jones University, South Carolina, and their granddaughter, Solenn.

The heartwarming manual “The Role of Spiritual Caregivers to the Terminally Ill Patients: A Resource Manual” by Jim Garcines is an eye-opener for anyone who has never worked in the field or has yet to confront the realities of death. This heartfelt and sober book can serve as a useful initiation for those new to the care of the terminally ill.

The author’s humble nature and sincere concern for dying patients are clearly visible and evident in his work. He is privileged and has a great opportunity to work in the hospital, where he has been exposed to and experienced several needs in pastoral care. His daily experience has taught him a lot about how to effectively minister to patients who are terminally ill and dying. Several times, he feels hurt and sympathetic toward others other than the family of patients.

Overall, the book serves as a guide for understanding the multifaceted role of spiritual caregivers and underscores the impact they have on the quality of life of terminally ill patients, promoting a compassionate approach to end-of-life care.
