Carolann deBellis’s life changed forever when, at 34, she suffered a severe brain injury and fell into a coma after a car accident on an icy New Jersey Turnpike in 1987. Before the accident, Carolann had it all—a thriving career at a hot Philadelphia salon, an enthusiastic 12-year marriage, and a wide circle of friends and family who marveled at her energy and infectious spirit.
Then, in the aftermath of the near-fatal accident, she lost everything—her job, her husband, and her sense of self. After relearning how to walk, talk, and even cut hair again, Carolann faced the lifelong challenge of not merely recovering, but of reinventing herself. With the help of psychological counseling and a loving circle of family and friends, she discovered that life before the accident wasn’t as perfect as it seemed. This painful, transformative process allowed her to redefine herself into a new Carolann—a work in progress who is less self-absorbed and more self-aware, less controlling, and more open in her relationships.
Her book, “Lady in Red, Where is Your Head?” is much more than a conventional memoir or self-help guide. It stitches together Carolann’s own words with a diary penned by her cousin Michael Biello during her coma and rehabilitation, hospital documents, notes from nurses and visitors, and a collection of inspirational quotes. “I wrote and rewrote this book for over 20 years to help others who have suffered or know someone who has suffered a brain injury,” Carolann explains. Her story offers hope to those directly or indirectly affected by traumatic brain injury and to anyone who believes it’s never too late to examine themselves and strive for a better life.
