As ARPress continues to push boundaries in the world of publishing, the connections made and feedback received at the Bologna Book Fair will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the company’s future endeavors. The book The Goldberg Variations: A Novel was displayed at the Bologna Book Fair (BCBF) in Bologna, Italy, from March 31 to April 3, 2025.
The story of The Goldberg Variations: A Novel revolves around two friends, Schaeffer and James, who are reunited after years of separation through an accidental meeting in New York’s Greenwich Village. Their interaction is almost an endless story about life and death, with the past and the present intertwining in a way that has no clear beginnings or endings. It feels a million miles away from nowhere.
This journey of words is not without considerable risk to both the teller and the listener, who is eventually joined by his girlfriend, Marie. A danger to the past is the confusion of times and identities, as the present seems to intrude upon the past. The Goldberg Variations, played by Glenn Gould, is a recurring theme throughout the novel. It serves as a comforting song, as does “First Piano Concerto” by Van Cliburn, which was beloved by Schaeffer’s mother until her death from cancer. Both artists achieved sudden fame followed by disappearances. The music was also listened to by both James and Marie when Schaeffer left without any notice.
Music is a universal language that connects people from all walks of life. Just as Schaeffer and his sick mother shared a love for music, it became a bridge that allowed them to truly communicate.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates from ARPress as it continues to innovate and inspire in the publishing industry.
