In this novel, the author vividly portrays a real medieval Italian mountain town, formed in an unknown century by the outcropping of rocks from a mountain in the Apennine Mountain range. This towering rock structure, located in a rural area of Europe, existed centuries before the region became the modern State of Italy.

Peter D. Cimini is an educator, inventor, and writer who holds two United States patents. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from New York University, served two years in the military, and taught in New York City Public Schools for three years, where he met his wife, Virginia. In 1970, Peter, Virginia, and their three children moved to Connecticut, where he worked as a curriculum specialist for the Newington Public Schools for 22 years before retiring to pursue his passion for writing.

The story of “The Angels of Opi” revolves around a poignant narrative highlighting the theme of captivity, family bonds, and the struggles faced during turbulent times. The plot begins in 1947 when Daniel Ciarletta and his father, Pete, embark on a journey to Italy to visit Pete’s ailing father. Their voyage sets the stage for a gripping tale that intertwines personal struggles with historical context.

In “The Angels of Opi”, the story of seven boys held captive for 11 years unfolds. When Daniel and Pete boarded a boat to Italy in 1947, they had no idea of the challenges that awaited them. Everything changed for Daniel and the Ciarletta family when Daniel was abducted and taken to Opi, a rural mountain community that had survived for centuries through sheep herding.

However, in 1943, retreating German soldiers seized all the boys and able-bodied young men from the town, forcing them into labor as work prisoners. Daniel soon became a victim of a devious plan devised by the citizens of Opi, including the local priest, who had seemingly lost his moral compass. The plan involved abducting young foreigners to replace the men the town had lost.

Unfamiliar with his surroundings, unable to speak Italian, and unsure of why he was taken, Daniel began working in the fields while plotting his escape. Meanwhile, back in America, the once happy and loving Ciarletta family began to disintegrate under the weight of conflict, anger, and guilt caused by Daniel’s mysterious disappearance.

In summary, “The Angels of Opi” by Peter D. Cimini is a compelling tale that explores themes of captivity, resilience, and familial love. Through the journey of Daniel Ciarletta and his father, readers are invited to reflect on the complexities of human relationships amidst adversity. The emotional undertones and historical context interwoven into the narrative ensure it is not just a story of individual experiences but also a poignant commentary on the broader implications of societal challenges.
