“Even in the case of the ungodly who would distort the message of the grace of God in order to excuse their immoral ways and to reject Jesus Christ, through prayer in the Holy Ghost [which builds uplove and faith] show that gentleness as spiritually discerned to some while others save with fear.”

In an age where spiritual confusion often outweighs biblical clarity, “Sound Doctrine for Today’s Christians: What the Bible Says” stands as a beacon of truth, guiding believers back to the firm foundation of Scripture. Authored by Rev. Preston N. Tolliver, Jr., this comprehensive volume delves deeply into the timeless principles of God’s Word, addressing both fundamental doctrines and modern moral dilemmas through the lens of biblical authority. With topics spanning from the nature of the Trinity and salvation to the complexities of Christian living, marriage, tolerance, and social issues, the book offers not merely commentary but direct exposition anchored in the King James Version of the Bible. It is a clarion call for Christians to study, understand, and live by sound doctrine in an era of spiritual compromise.
Reverend Preston Nathaniel Tolliver, Jr. is the grandson of Rev. Dr. Patrick N. Toliver (deceased), Boy Preacher of Staunton, Virginia, who at the time of his passing was the fourth pastor in the history of the Zion Union Baptist Church, Charlottesville, Virginia. Rev. Tolliver is the eldest son of Deacon and Mrs. Preston N. Tolliver, Sr., who are longtime members of the Greater First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. Rev. Tolliver is a 1972 graduate of the Howard University School of Engineering and a 1983 graduate of the DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.
He is an Associate Minister to the Rev. Dr. George Waddles, Pastor of the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church South, Chicago, and Dean of the Congress of Christian Education, National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc. Rev. Tolliver is certified to teach in the National Baptist Convention. Called, licensed and ordained at the Lilydale Progressive Baptist Church, Chicago, under Rev. Lawrence E. Mosley, Sr., (deceased), Rev. Tolliver has been a pastoral volunteer at the Safer Crossroads Community Correctional Center since 1997. Married since 1974 with two married children, a son licensed to preach and a daughter certified as Dean of Christian Education.
In the opening chapters, Rev. Tolliver establishes the significance of studying the Bible, reminding readers that Scripture is not merely a historical record but the living Word of God—profitable for instruction, correction, and righteousness. He systematically unpacks doctrines that are central to Christian faith: the Godhead (Trinity), the preeminence of Christ, and the believer’s call to salvation and holiness. Each subject is accompanied by direct scriptural citations, ensuring that readers encounter biblical truth rather than human speculation. The author emphasizes that spiritual growth and discernment stem from immersion in Scripture, prayer, and obedience to Christ.
As the book progresses, it expands beyond theological understanding to address the practical outworking of faith in every aspect of life. Rev. Tolliver confronts moral and ethical challenges—such as wealth, work, marriage, discipline, tolerance, sin, and societal change—through clear biblical teaching. He does not shy away from controversial issues but instead grounds each discussion in Scripture, encouraging readers to align personal convictions with divine truth. This blend of doctrinal rigor and real-world application makes Sound Doctrine for Today’s Christians both a theological manual and a moral compass for the 21st-century believer.
“Sound Doctrine for Today’s Christians” is more than a theological treatise—it is a spiritual handbook for modern discipleship. In a culture where truth is often diluted by opinion and convenience, this book restores confidence in the absolute authority of God’s Word. Its exhaustive use of Scripture invites readers to engage with the Bible directly, while its practical insights help translate doctrine into daily living. Whether you are a new believer seeking foundational understanding or a seasoned Christian striving for deeper conviction, Rev. Tolliver’s work provides clarity, conviction, and comfort.
This book compels readers to not only know what they believe, but to live it out boldly in faith and integrity—making it a must-read for anyone serious about walking in sound doctrine.
