In a world where so many are stretched thin, financially, emotionally, even spiritually, the idea of giving can feel almost impossible. We live in times marked by inflation, global crises, and constant news of need and suffering. For many, generosity feels like one more weight added to already heavy shoulders. And yet, in the middle of this, Dr. Vincent Onyebuchi Nwankpa offers a refreshing reminder in his book The Joy of Faithful and Cheerful Giving: that giving isn’t about guilt, pressure, or losing something. It’s about joy. It’s about freedom. It’s about discovering how generosity can actually lift us, even in uncertain times.

There are books that feel more like conversations than lectures, and The Joy of Faithful and Cheerful Giving by Dr. Vincent Onyebuchi Nwankpa is one of those. It’s not written to impress with lofty words or heavy theology; it’s written to get right to the heart of something most Christians wrestle with, giving.

Now, “giving” might not be the most comfortable topic. For a lot of people, it brings guilt or frustration, maybe even suspicion. But Dr. Nwankpa has a way of shifting the focus. He doesn’t talk about giving like it’s a burden or a tax; he presents it as a joy, a privilege even. His book walks through both Old and New Testament principles, explores the reasons and motives behind giving, and gently challenges readers to see generosity not as an obligation, but as a reflection of love and faith.

And here’s the thing, he’s not just writing theory. His own life backs it up.

Dr. Vincent Onyebuchi Nwankpa, Ph.D., wears many hats: pastor, missionary, teacher, and author. Together with his wife, Chinyere, he co-founded Eternal Word Communication Ministries. They also started Eternal Word Christian Schools International in Imo State, Nigeria, a school that literally began in their living room in California and grew into a thriving institution serving hundreds of students back home. That story alone feels like a sermon on faith and perseverance.

Before all that, Dr. Nwankpa spent years as an educator with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Even in “retirement,” he hasn’t slowed down. He still teaches, preaches monthly at Long Beach Rescue Mission, and serves as an elder at Long Beach Alliance Church. He’s also written other works, including Understanding Cultural Perspectives, God’s Word and Missions.

But beyond the titles and ministries, what stands out is his heart. He loves children, loves teaching, and above all, loves pointing people to Jesus. Friends and colleagues describe him as someone who doesn’t just talk about faith, he lives it, often quietly and faithfully, in classrooms, pulpits, and even mission fields both in Nigeria and the U.S.

The Joy of Faithful and Cheerful Giving isn’t a book that scolds or shames readers into opening their wallets. Instead, it feels like an invitation to look again at what giving really means, and how it can transform not just churches or charities, but the giver’s own heart.

And maybe that’s the biggest takeaway from both the book and the man who wrote it: generosity, when rooted in love, changes everything.
