Some authors write books. J. Lynn Currie lives his.
When a book blends heartfelt personal stories with thoughtful reflections on faith, science, and philosophy, it’s natural to wonder about the mind behind the words. In I Believe in Santa Claus and I Believe in God, J. Lynn Currie shares not only his reasons for believing in God but also the life experiences and questions that shaped those beliefs. Through this article, readers will meet the author himself, his background, his journey, and the unique perspective that threads through every page of his work. By the end, you’ll not only understand the heart of his book, but also the man who wrote it.
Readers often come to I Believe in Santa Claus and I Believe in God expecting a dense, academic defense of faith. Instead, they find a voice that moves easily from discussing the origins of the universe to telling a boyhood story about being teased for believing in Santa Claus and somehow making it all feel like part of the same conversation.
In person, Currie is much the same. Thoughtful, warm, and quietly mischievous, he can discuss thermodynamics one moment and then grin as he admits he still “believes in Santa,” not as a magical man in a sleigh, but as a tradition worth preserving for the joy it brings.
His ability to blend intellect and approachability is rooted in a rich background. Currie completed undergraduate studies in philosophy and theology at Lincoln Christian University, then earned both a B.A. and M.A. in psychology from the University of Illinois – Springfield, specializing in social psychology and research design. His master’s paper was a comprehensive review of research on religiosity. Over the years, he has taught at the community college level and worked in roles ranging from Job Training Counselor to Research Analyst and Program Evaluator for various government programs. In the church, he has served as a youth group sponsor, deacon, and teacher. Today, he and his wife are active members of the Episcopal Church in Decatur, Illinois.
When meeting with him, one quickly notices how effortlessly he navigates between scientific reasoning and theological reflection. He doesn’t pressure anyone to adopt his views; instead, he invites conversation, offering ideas that leave room for curiosity and doubt.
Those who walk away from a conversation with J. Lynn Currie often find they’ve gained more than an answer to why he believes in God. They’ve met a man who sees the fingerprints of design in both galaxies and roses, who respects reality but cherishes mystery, and who still, at least in spirit, keeps a place for Santa Claus on his Christmas list.
