“When considering dietary differences, it is not only the content of the diet that is important but also the amount eaten. Mice and rats fed on low-calorie diets can live up to 40% longer. Longterm studies on monkeys have shown that those fed on a lowcalorie diet both live longer and are less prone to disease. Studies of long-living populations can be compared with other populations in the short term when dietary and other differences come to light and valuable data is accrued. Dietary factors, though fundamental, are not the only factors to be considered.”

“Lifestyle and Longevity” by Dr. Tom Taylor is a health-focused guide that explores the factors influencing human longevity and provides strategies to improve and extend life. Dr. Taylor, a surgeon with extensive expertise in intestinal diseases and nutrition, combines his professional experience to outline the interplay of diet, lifestyle, and disease prevention.
Dr. Tom Taylor was born in Preston, England, and grew up in Longridge, playing cricket for the village team. He attended a Jesuit grammar school in Preston, where he was awarded the A-level physics prize and achieved an A+ in A-level maths. His journey in medicine began at medical schools in Edinburgh and Manchester, a journey marked by personal loss when his father passed away while he was a student.
He trained as a surgeon at esteemed institutions like the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, the Royal Post Graduate Medical School, London, and the Manchester Royal Infirmary. His career further evolved as he became a senior lecturer in surgery at the University of Edinburgh and later a consultant surgeon at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Throughout his career and beyond, he has been actively involved in surgical research. Winning the Moynihan Prize for his research on the treatment of oesophageal varices, a complication of liver disease, was a highlight. He was also honored with the James IV traveling fellowship, which allowed him to visit multiple centers across the United States.
The book “Lifestyle and Longevity” emphasizes that modern health challenges such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and dementia often share common dietary and lifestyle causes. Dr. Taylor discusses how poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and fast-food consumption contribute to these diseases, while also offering solutions, including dietary adjustments and increased physical activity, to reverse or delay their effects.
Additional topics include the role of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors in maintaining health. Taylor advocates for preventative care and highlights the impact of modern conveniences on physical and mental well-being, emphasizing that many life-shortening trends are reversible.
This book combines practical advice with an understanding of disease mechanisms, offering readers actionable steps to foster a healthier, longer life.
“In writing this book, I have utilized my lifelong professional experience in dealing with disease processes in the practice of surgery and have studied in detail intestinal diseases related to diet, including obesity and diabetes.” Dr. Taylor advises on major disease avoidance and treatment.
