Charles Campise, the author of “Adventures of a Rideshare Driver,” has lived an extraordinary life shaped by his Sicilian heritage, professional accomplishments, and adventurous outlook. Born in Houston, Texas, Charles is the grandson of immigrants from Poggio Reale, Sicily, who were among the early settlers in an Italian community near Bryan, Texas, in the late 1880s. With a strong commitment to education, Charles earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a double master’s degree in educational psychology and social work. Driven by his curiosity and determination, he also became fluent in Spanish through independent study.
For 44 years, Charles dedicated his career to serving Texas’ foster care system, providing vital support to children and families. After retiring in June 2014, he sought a new adventure and quickly found one as a rideshare driver. Over the next eight years, Charles completed an astonishing 14,100 trips and interacted with over 20,000 passengers across central Texas. His time behind the wheel not only connected him with diverse individuals but also provided countless stories and experiences, which became the foundation of his only book, “Adventures of a Rideshare Driver.”
Charles’ book is a captivating collection of stories from his rideshare journeys, blending humor, personal anecdotes, and historical insights about Texas. The book shows his ability to transform ordinary encounters into memorable narratives, offering readers a window into the lives of his passengers and the culture of the region. Alongside the amusing and heartfelt tales, Charles weaves in his knowledge of Texas’ history, making his book a unique blend of memoir and cultural storytelling.
Although Charles retired from riding after a near-fatal car accident on November 22, 2022, his legacy endures through his writing. His first and only book, “Adventures of a Rideshare Driver,” captures the essence of human connection and the unexpected joys found in everyday life. Charles Campise’s journey—from his roots in Sicilian immigration to his decades in social work and his adventures on the road—continues to inspire readers, proving that every interaction holds the potential for a great story.
