Every year, authors, publishers, and readers eagerly anticipate the announcement of the Eric Hoffer Book Award honorees. The wait is finally over, as the results for the 2026 Eric Hoffer Book Award have officially been released, and A Trip to the Moon by Geeta Pati has been recognized as one of this year’s honorees.

The announcement of the 2026 Eric Hoffer Book Award honorees marks another significant milestone in the literary world, highlighting the outstanding accomplishments of authors and publishers who embody the spirit of independent thought, creativity, and excellence in publishing. The prestigious award continues to honor the legacy of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by recognizing books of exceptional merit from small, academic, and independent presses, including self-published works.

The Eric Hoffer Award encompasses a wide range of honors, including the Grand Prize, category awards, and distinguished recognitions across numerous literary genres. In addition, special distinctions such as the Montaigne Medal for the most thought-provoking books, the da Vinci Eye for superior book cover art, the First Horizon Award for debut authors, and the Medal Provocateur for experimental poetry continue to celebrate the diversity and innovation within the independent publishing community.

While the Grand Prize remains the pinnacle of the Eric Hoffer Book Award, earning recognition itself is already a remarkable accomplishment. The award’s rigorous judging process ensures that only books demonstrating exceptional literary quality, originality, and artistic integrity receive acknowledgment. According to the Eric Hoffer Award organization, fewer than 10% of nominees advance to become category finalists, making every recognition a meaningful achievement in independent publishing.

For independent authors and publishers, this recognition provides increased visibility and credibility in an increasingly competitive literary marketplace. Recognition from the Eric Hoffer Award can also open opportunities for broader media exposure, speaking engagements, professional networking, and expanded readership.

This year, A Trip to the Moon by Geeta Pati joins the roster of distinguished books recognized by the Eric Hoffer Book Award. The recognition honors the book’s literary merit and educational contribution to children’s literature. Celebrated for its originality, creativity, and engaging approach to science education, the work reflects the spirit of the award by presenting meaningful ideas that inspire curiosity, imagination, and learning among young readers.

The book has also earned international recognition through major literary events and prestigious publishing platforms. A Trip to the Moon was displayed at the 2024 Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse), one of the world’s largest and most influential publishing trade fairs. The event brought together publishers, authors, literary agents, and media professionals from around the globe, allowing the book to reach a broad international audience while highlighting its relevance in children’s educational literature and science-based storytelling.

The book’s participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair emphasized its contribution to making science enjoyable and accessible to younger audiences. Through imaginative storytelling, A Trip to the Moon introduces children to scientific concepts while encouraging exploration, creativity, and curiosity about outer space and the universe.

The US Review of Books (USRB) also recommended and highly praised A Trip to the Moon. Reviewer Amanda Hanson commended the book’s educational and imaginative approach, noting how the story effectively introduces children to astronomy and space exploration through engaging adventures and memorable characters.

The USRB review states:

“This clever storytelling technique not only invites children to join in on the adventure but also empowers them to learn and explore alongside the characters.”

The book tells the story of the historic Apollo 11 moon mission through the adventures of a rabbit, a crow, and a fish, accompanied by a wise old owl. Together, they journey to the Moon while learning scientific facts about gravity, lunar exploration, and outer space through exciting experiences and discoveries. By blending fiction with educational content, the book transforms science learning into an enjoyable and memorable adventure for children.

Beyond its entertaining storyline, the book carries meaningful themes of curiosity, courage, imagination, and the importance of lifelong learning. The narrative encourages children to ask questions, embrace discovery, and develop enthusiasm for science and exploration. Through its engaging storytelling style, the book demonstrates that education can be both informative and entertaining.

Geeta Pati is a children’s science writer who strongly believes in teaching science to children and young adults through interesting stories and illustrations. She earned a graduate degree in psychology before immigrating to the United States and later devoted herself to children’s education in the physical and biological sciences. Her experiences as a volunteer teacher in Maryland helped shape her passion for educational storytelling and inspired her to make scientific concepts easier for children to understand.

Her inspiration for writing A Trip to the Moon came from years of exposure to scientific discussions and her desire to make science accessible to young readers. Inspired by interactions with physicists and researchers, including her husband, Dr. Jogesh Pati, Geeta developed imaginative stories that explain scientific concepts in simple, relatable, and engaging ways.

Geeta Pati was also interviewed by Benji Cole from CBS Radio, where she discussed the inspiration behind A Trip to the Moon and her mission of making science enjoyable and approachable for children through storytelling.
