“Why is there something rather than nothing?” It is one of the most profound and unsettling questions ever asked. If at one point there had been absolutely nothing, no time, no space, no energy, no spirit, then nothing could exist now. Nothing produces nothing. And yet, here we are, living, breathing, questioning.
In his book I Believe in Santa Claus and I Believe in God, J. Lynn Currie wrestles with this very mystery. He observes that when you strip away all speculation, there are really only three possibilities:
- Matter has always existed.
- Something came from nothing.
- God has always existed and created everything.
Modern science sometimes speaks as if “nothing” can produce “something.” But as Currie reminds us, if “nothing” has qualities, quantum energy, potential, or fluctuations, then it is no longer truly nothing. Absolute nothingness has no power, no essence, no capacity. It cannot give birth to galaxies, stars, or life itself.
For centuries, people thought the universe was eternal. But modern cosmology tells a different story. The Big Bang, about 13.8 billion years ago, marked the beginning of space, time, and matter itself. If matter is not eternal, it must have a source outside itself.
This leads us to the only remaining answer: God has always existed. He is the eternal “I AM,” the uncaused cause, the One who spoke matter, energy, and time into being. As Currie puts it, believing in God as Creator is not irrational, it is, in fact, more reasonable than believing that everything emerged from nothingness.
The Apostle Paul declared: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). Creation itself points us back to its Maker.
The question of why there is “something” instead of “nothing” is not just a philosophical exercise. It is deeply personal. If God created everything, then our lives are not accidents of random chance but purposeful gifts. Existence itself becomes a sign of God’s love.
Currie’s reflections remind us that faith is not blind. It is a response to reason, evidence, and the reality that points beyond itself. In a world that exists against all odds, belief in God is not only possible, it is compelling.
